Many of us have been conditioned to believe that forgiveness is a gift that we give to others after they have done something that hurts us, but it is a gift that we give ourselves. When someone hurts us, we sometimes get caught up and bogged down by negative feelings such as anger, betrayal, sadness, the list is endless. Take a minute to think about it – do these feelings affect you or the other person more? Let’s take a deeper look at forgiveness.

What Is Forgiveness?

So, what actually is forgiveness? Is it the simple act of saying sorry or asking for it? Or, is it a gift, a pardon delivered to another for their previous actions? It turns out that forgiveness goes a bit deeper than that. Yes, it is an act of releasing someone from the emotional consequences of something they have done in the past, but it is also an act of liberating ourselves from the emotions we felt as a result.

We when hold these negative feelings inside of ourselves it affects our life and our energy. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you have to forget what may have happened. It simply means that you are choosing to move past the negative feelings attached to situation or person.

Why Should I Forgive?

Forgiveness does not have to prelude a reconciliation; you can forgive without welcoming someone back into your life. Forgiveness is incredibly important for spiritual progress and emotional maturity. Holding a grudge is easy, but it requires a bit more thought and directed energy.

It addition to spiritual and emotional benefits like lowering anxiety and stress and improving self-esteem, it is proven to have physical benefits, as well. These include lowering blood pressure, improving your immune system, and even improving your heart health.

In another sense, forgiveness is a way to free yourself – the other person doesn’t even have to ask for it. You should forgive because it allows you to release negative emotions that are keeping you from enjoying any inner peace.

How Does Forgiveness Help Me?

We often think of forgiveness as a way of making amends, forgetting about past events, or condoning the behaviors of other when they have done something that hurts us, but this form of forgiveness is not universal. Forgiveness is an internal practice that helps you come to terms with past experiences that include suffering, anger, resentment, and pain.

Moving past these situations allows you to find the freedom to move forward. This allows you to create more positive energy in your life and in yourself. Essentially, forgiveness is a gift that you give to yourself. Of course, it is not as easy as it sounds, but the benefits of expressing and embracing forgiveness far outweigh the problems caused by carrying around all of that negative and draining energy and emotions. Overall, the more you show forgiveness to yourself and others throughout your life, the more you will be able to embrace positivity, gratitude, and total wellbeing.
